이 작품은 수원능행도 8곡병 중의 한 장면인 환어행렬도(還御行列圖)인데, 앞의 능행도와는 세부묘사나 설채에 다소 차이가 있어, 작가가 다른 8곡병에서 분리되어 나온 것 같다. 이 장면은 정조가 사도세자의 묘소인 현륭원(顯隆園)을 성묘하고, 혜경궁에게 진찬례(進饌禮)를 올린 다음 화성(華城)에서의 모든 행사 일정을 끝마치고 화성을 출발하여 한양으로 향하는 모습을 그린 것이다. 6000여 명의 인원과 1400여 필의말이 동원된 대규모 행렬을 지그재그로 늘어놓아 한화면에서 그 전모를 파악할 수 있도록 배려한 화면 구성이 압권이다. 또한 화면 윗부분으로 갈수록 인물이 작아지고 길도 좁아져 결국 행렬의 끝이 희미해지는 원근법적 묘사는 다른 예를 찾아보기 어려울 정도로 뛰어나다. 인물, 수목, 산수 배경의 세부 묘사가 어느것 하나 소홀함이 없이 정교한데, 특히 단원 김홍도등 18세기 말 조선 화단에서 유행하던 화풍이 그대로 반영되어 있어, 일반적인 기록화의 정형화된 성격과는 다른 면모를 보여주는 빼어난 작품이다.

오재순 초상

순암 오재순(醇庵 吳載純, 1727~1792)은 정조 때 판중추부사까지 오른 관리이자 학식 높은 학자로 유명하며, 회화사적으로는 능호관 이인상(凌壺館 李麟祥, 1710~1760)과 친교가 깊었던 오찬(吳瓚, 1717~1751)의 조카로, 1744년 이인상이 그린 <북동아회도(北洞雅會圖)>를 보고 소감을 남기기도 하는 등 서화에 조예가 깊은 인물로 알려져 있다. 이 작품은 정조 때 초상화를 잘 그렸던 화원 이명기가 오재순의 나이 65세 때의 모습을 그린 것으로 전해지지만 확실하지는 않다.
초상화의 인물은 정장 관복 차림을 하고 의자에 앉아 근엄하게 정면을 응시한 자세로 앉아 있다. 바닥에 돗자리가 깔려 있지 않아 배경이 비어 있고, 등받침에 호피(虎皮)가 깔려 있는 의자나 족좌대(足座臺) 위에 자연스럽게 놓은 발의 위치도 당시 초상화에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 전형적인 모습이다. 특히 관복의 주름을 많이 잡아 주름의 굴곡을 강조하고 그 부위를 어둡게 그려 음영(陰影)을 적극적으로 표현한 것이 주목된다. 초상화에서 가장 중요한 얼굴 묘사도 가는 붓질 하나하나를 세밀하게 그려 얼굴의 윤곽을 나타내기보다는 선염을 위주로 한 음영 표현에 더욱 치중하여 보다 생생함을 추구했음을 알 수 있다.
이러한 형식의 작품은 17세기 말에서 18세기 초 사이에 그려졌던 공신도(功臣圖)의 형식을 계승한 것으로, 18세기 후반 공신도의 형식이 일반사대부의 초상화에까지 확산되었음을 입증해 주는 중요한 자료가 되고 있다.

O Jae-Sun (1727 - 1792) was a high government official and scholar during the reign of King Jeongjo and was also a nephew of O Chan (1717 - 1751), a close friend to the painter Yi In-sang (1710 - 1760). There even exists an extant commentary on Yi In-sang’s painting, “Bukdong Ahoedo,” dated 1744. This portrait of the scholar-official O Jae-Sun was painted by the renowned portrait painter Yi Myeong-Gi when the sitter was 65 years of age. The portrait, with the sitter in a dignified pose wearing official dress, follows the late-18th-century style of portraying meritorious retainers. As the usually present floor mat is missing, there is no clear indication of a background or foreground space. The tiger skin on the back of the chair and the positioning of the feet on the stool also follow the style typical of the period. The numerous creases on the garment stress the indentations and movement of the fabric, with darkened areas indicating shade. In depicting the face, which was considered the most important part of a portrait, emphasis was placed on shading to realistically achieve the contours of the face rather than on minute brushwork.
